Today, while meeting with a client over an upcoming holiday party, one of our favorite AFE obsessions was revealed…How much we love to jazz up a simple glass of champagne!

Although mimosas and bellinis are the fizzy drinks to coin the trick, both are unfortunately reserved for daylight drinking.

At A Fare, we found a one-two-punch addition that transforms our trusty and true champagne into an elegant evening beverage. Just add your favorite liqueur and a sugared rim!

It gives you just a hint of flavoring and a look that is more than sleek…

And oh so subtle…

_MG_7688We recommend a splash of peach, pear or elderflower. Perfect for these hot days (and nights!)

Labor Day supposedly marks the official end to summer, although Houston weathermen report it a more “unofficial” end to the season as sweltering tempertatures will continue.  Positive Translation: we have a few more weeks to get away with our stark white ensembles!

So what do we throw on when we really have to tuck away our white linen pants? Co-presenters, Houston magazine and Tootsie’s, gave us more than a few inspiring looks with Wednesday’s Fresh Faces of Fashion event!

Ten Houston fashionistas modeled an impressive fall runway show of prints, platforms and Pucci galore. We were thrilled to be a sponsor of the event!

Donning hot pink and neon orange ties, our bartenders served up refreshing specialty cocktails that incorporated Double Cross Vodka (a hot new item on the market you must run out and try!)

Off the runway, all 400 +  guests were a fashion show in and of themselves! Only interupting their mingling and designer-dud browsing to pick up a yummy cucumber slice of tuna tartare…

It was a night to remember, and if nothing else, a great indicator of the fabulous, fashion-forward fall to come!

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with string…” Maria may have struck a note in our hearts with The Sound of Music back in the day, but today it takes a bit more umpf  to make the “favorite things” list!

Let’s just say you’d be hard pressed to find a modern-day woman who would leave ANY of the elements of Saturday’s event off her so-called list!

Let me highlight the key words for you… BRIDES Magazine hit 10 major markets on Saturday with a De Beers in-store event, inclusing San Fran, NYC, LA, Vegas, and yes… HoustonA Fare Extraordinaire was there to serve the Dom Perignon and the presentation of sweets as guests browsed the endless offerings of diamond designs.

Now those are a few of my favorite things!

Good and Bad News: Select restaurants are extending their Restaurant Week specials through September 6th! Still $35 for a 3 Course Dinner and $20 for a 2 Course Lunch.

The down side: You literally can’t move after two courses, let alone three or four! I’m not joking when I advise you to bring a friend to help wheel you out to the car.

The up side: We’ve done some preliminary scoping for you and can tell you 1) Polo’s dessert of English Truffle and Benjy’s Honey Glazed Duck Breast are phenomenal and 2) some restaurants are offering the same set prices for 4 course dinners and 3 course lunches! Upping the Restaurant Week ante!

Enough said, enjoy your savory weekend of fare exploration!

pre-tasting tasting

24 Aug 2010

Here’s a sneak peak of just ONE of the entrees we’ve put together for a special tasting we have tomorrow…we’re all so excited we can hardly stand it!

Emery Weiner 006

We’ve been working around the clock to design the perfect specialty beverage, passed hors d’ oeuvres, first courses, entrees, passed desserts and more!! All within the confines of a completely kosher menu. It hasn’t been easy, but the end result will hopefully knock our client’s socks off.

Wish us luck!

summer’s breezing by

Summer is the notorious slow season for party-planning, so what’s the deal this year?! We’re as busy as ever helping any and everyone celebrate occassions, large and small!

How do we keep our energy going when time is ticking away faster than we can crank out proposals? My Fit Foods!

my fit

We have to give a shout out to our friends down the street for keeping us fed with their microwavable, all-natural meals!

We, of course, would prefer to cook ourselves or to taste some of the inventive recipes brewing in our AFE kitchen, but sometimes all you have on your hands is 2 minutes before an event! My Fit Foods warm in 1.5 minutes, leaving about 30 seconds to eat. A perfect fit for our on-the-go lifestyle!

My favorite is probably the chicken and veggies:

MmmMmm…thank goodness a health conscious company jumped on the fast-food train, saving us time AND our figures!

smokin hot!

In: Food

18 Aug 2010

What’s the smokin hot culinary trend to follow at the moment? Smoked meat!

We smoke ours completely in-house, which has given us the freedom to create items such as smoked duck and apple saffron crepes, smoked trout and red wine slaw tacos (below) and the best beef and tuna carpaccio in town!

HnR 112208 152

Smoking meat originated as a method of  preserving protein-rich foods, due to the dehydrating  property of smoke, but in today’s world of refrigerators and freezers, it is more a process of preparing delicious and cultural delicacies!

Smoked meat is great for these summer temperatures; a refreshing alternative to a steaming hot piece of steak right off the grill. Plus the smoke enhances flavors like you wouldn’t believe (and I’m not just saying that because of my BBQ-lovin Texas childhood) … So jump on that smokin hot band wagon and order some!

Who said pool parties are for five-year-olds with floaties or flirting teens with braces? With the right added elements, your pool can be the perfect venue for your swanky adults-only party. Just ask Las Vegas! Or the client we helped throw this shindig for on Sunday…

You’ve already got the gorgeous blue of the pool, so add in exotic flowers for contrasting color…

And of course delicious food manned by attentive staff (that somehow manage to mantain smiling faces despite the heat!!)

And an area to recover in from the food overload…

And there’s your poolside chic! Turned over with less than 24-hours notice…can you believe it? Whewf!

Just leave it to us! No matter the timeframe, we’ll make a big splash!

personalized touches

In: Events

10 Aug 2010

Our philosophy (both in our professional and personal lives) is that if you’re going to take hours out of your day (or month!) to plan an event, you might as well expend another fifteen minutes and insert some personalized touches.

We continually encourage our clients to do the same. Customized menu signage, themed name plates, departing gifts, etc.  give an otherwise “already seen it” event some real sparkle factor!

_MG_8440

We love to design treats and tags to fit your event…

New Image17Just at this weekend’s Engagement Party we created diamond ring sugar cookies with a tag that read “On a Bridge in London…She Said Yes!” They were a huge hit, and got the bride and groom-to-be talking about the special engagement night they shared weeks ago.

So get those creative juices flowing. You won’t be dissapointed in the end result, especially the endless string of “You’re so inventive, how do you do it?” compliments!

How many times a day do you hear Houstonians utilize “inside the loop vs. outside the loop” when offering up directions? Probably a million. Well if you haven’t heard, Houston Museum of Natural Science has taken a stride to help close that gap!

The Sugar Land Museum of Natural Science opened in October 2009, and has since been gaining momentum as a place to learn, explore and throw special events. We took part in an open house just this week, and our jaws absolutely dropped when we took a peak at the rental prices for this spectacular space. It’s smaller, yes… but impressive, yes!

Sugar-Land-FrontThis unique building used to be a Texas prision, but now houses hundreds of gems and artifacts, a calendar of ever-changing exhibits, and a planitarium.

This guy greets you as you walk in…

t-rex

…and the fun continues from there! Perfect for a corporate retreat, kid’s birthday party, small gala or any kind of reception.

We’ve already produced a 100-person Bat Mitzvah there, and can see many more special events in our future.

So for all those living outside the loop (or secretly dying for a quick reprieve from the inner-loop hustle bustle), hop on 59 and we’ll meet you there for some AFE fun!
