hand painted sugar cubes

Last season we had the opportunity to cater a launch party for Knoll’s Houston location.  The piece being launched, Generation By Knoll, is by far the most comfy office chair I have ever had the pleasure of testing!  After walking through the showroom, Rachael and I sat down to put together the menu.  Knoll’s enthusiastic team stopped by A Fare Extraordinaire for a quick tasting, where we sampled some of our signature items and brainstormed.  Our goal was to make the menu just as unique and specialized as the Generation itself!  All of our discussions seemed to go back to the chair, and we found ourselves analyzing the colors of the Generation.  Suddenly, as we sipped on the proposed specialty drink for the evening, we had an idea!  We were tasting the Elderflower Elixir – a Chicago-inspired prosecco drink.  We all agreed that the amber-colored drink was much more decadent when a sugar cube was involved.  Why not use a “Knoll orange” sugar cube instead of a plain white one?

I will never forget the look on our executive chef’s face when we told him that we needed him and his team of experienced culinary chefs to hand paint 800 sugar cubes with orange food coloring.  Let’s just say it was worth it!
